People and Their Pets Photography

August 17, 2015 · Emily Star Poole

I had a mentor in writing school who told me that I should always write about 1.) the subjects/events that are the strangest/weirdest and 2.) the subjects/events that produce the most emotion in me because those are the stories that will have the most “meat” to them. Most of the advice given to writers is also relevant to photographers (visual storytellers). One way to get a good portrait of a person is to find out what it is that he or she loves with a wild, crazy, weird and passionate love, and then place that thing in their arms.

I hosted a series of mini-sessions entitled People and Their Pets. Pets definitely produce those “meat-y” kinds of stories. I didn’t plan for it to be all dogs (in fact I even offered discounts to anyone would book a session with their snake) but the dog lovers were the ones who jumped on the chance to pose with their beloved!

Below are some of the highlights from my own People and Their Pets mini-sessions. Enjoy!

P.S. If you want to get a dog to look at the camera, the surest way to get the shot is to humble yourself and call out in a high pitch bark–works every time. -E
